Gary Jackson is interested in the past and the historical forces that interacted to form the present and how these forces will continue to interact and create the future.
The Civil War marked a turning point for women and their role in society. Women were expected to cook and clean to make the home comfortable for the family and presentable for guests. With the outbreak of the Civil War, however, many women nursed soldiers, spied on the enemy, cooked and laundered for enlisted men, and fought as soldiers by concealing their identities and enlisting as men.
